Swansea fielded a number of youngsters including a debut performance by Lee Healey. Hollins wasn't present on the bench today but sat in the stand (ready to join in with the Hollins Out chants no doubt) Merthyr had the first real chance after about 5 mins when a forward charged towards the penalty area and was fouled just outside the box. The resulting free kick took a wicked deflection and left Freestone stranded, but fortunately the ball rolled past the post.
After 14 mins after a neat 1 - 2 with Walter Boyd, Verchave finish well from about 10 yards with a low shot into the corner of the net. The goal seemed to settle the Swans down, and for the first time started to take control with good pass and move football. Just before half time when we appeared to very comfortable, Fabriano fouled a Merthyr player and from the resulting 'handbags at 5 paces' exchange, appeared to aim a head butt at the opponent. The ref (even though he had got little right up until this point) had little option but to send him off. The second half the proved a different affair, with the Swans down to 10 men Merthyr had a lot more possession. Swansea seemed happy to absorb any pressure and conceded a number of corner but the Swans goal was rarely threatened seriously. With about 15 mins left, a weak back header from a Merthyr defender, with an indecisive Merthyr keeper unsure weather to leave his line or not saw Keegan pounce on the ball an drill a low shot in off the post from about 7 yards. The youngsters in defence Healey, Todd & De Vulght all deserve a mention for solid performances. A couple of other performances that caught the eye included...
