Lister's view - Roy Anthony
A cloudless sky and mild day greeted the 100 or so Jacks who made the
long journey to Feethams and even if it did only cost £8 to stand in
the antiquated terraces there will not be many visiting supporters who
will miss Feethams when it goes next season. The atmosphere amongst
the very vocal Jacks was relaxed and made even more so when the local
announcer asked home fans to "welcome Swansea Sound - sorry!, City."
Although Swansea had nothing to lose in this game, Darlington
desperately needed a win following their very bad run and off the
pitch affairs. Subsequently, they started the brighter and had a few
decent chances although thankfully for the Swans, their makeshift
attack never looked truly convincing in front of goal. The Swans back
four dealt with most things and any shots getting through were either
tame or well dealt with by Freestone who had plenty of opportunity to
practice dealing with the usual one on ones.
The first 20 minutes were a frantic mess and Swansea desperately
needed someone to stand on the ball and to start controlling the game.
Mumford was putting himself around in an effort to dominate the game
but the Darlington midfield never let the Swans players' settle.
Swansea were never out of the game, though and having weathered the
early storm slowly came back into it with Williams' pace threatening
to cause problems to the Darlo back 4. In the space of 10 minutes he
had a long distance shot, had a scramble smothered on the goal line by
the keeper and managed to shift his feet quickly to get a snap shot
away. From the break, Howard body checked the Darlo winger into the
stand and there weren't many complaints at the resultant yellow in the
39th minute. The free kick was headed wide. Howard made amends almost
immediately with an excellent through ball for Williams to run on to
but he was beaten by a very quick keeper.
Half time came and went and Darlo started again much brighter than the
Swans and Freestone and the back 4 were again put under pressure from
various corners and shots. Row Z was used frequently.
It wasn't until the 60th minute that Swansea were able to put any
pressure on the home side when Williams skinned the left back and
drove into the 6 yard box only to see the keeper again save with his
legs from Mumfords side footed effort.
Williams was subbed in the 62nd and was well applauded by home and
visiting fans alike. Mama came on and the Swans enjoyed a passage of
play that led to a couple of corners and saw Todd well forward for the
first time. However it was Brodie who lashed a shot onto the near post
that brought the biggest cheer.
In the 35th Casey was relaced by Romo.
The miss of the match, though, goes to the Darlo forward who managed
to head high wide and handsome from 6 yards following an excellent
cross by Wainwright that comfotably cleared Todd and O'Leary.
The last 10 minutes passed with Darlo pressing for a winner but never
causing any serious problems and when the final whistle blew at 0 - 0
most people would have agreed that it was a fair score. Having said
that it could well have been 4 - 4 with the chances that went begging
from both sides and that would have held the interest of both sets of
fans at this time of the season than the well fought out draw that
materialised.
The Swans showed their appreciation of the travelling support who out
sung, cheered and chanted the 2915 home fans who were for the main,
silent. The Swans fans would probably have been even more vociferous
had they not been distracted by 2 or 3 Jacks telling all who wanted to
listen about a shop they had been to that had blacked out windows and
that only men went into!
This was a good, solid end of season performance by the team who, with
the exception of the Welsh Cup, have nothing to play for but pride.
This they did today.
