  • Lister's view - Gary Martin

The traffic into Swansea city centre was quite congested and I expected to see a big turn out for Jan Molby's first return since Hamer showed him the door.

Disappointingly, the traffic was for an under 16's night at one of the local night clubs on the Kingsway where the queues reminded me of Swansea v West Ham in the last century.

The crowd at the Vetch turned out to be a disappointing 3508 and this despite the Kids for £2 scheme which did generate a few extra through the turnstiles.

Addison line us up in the familiar 3-5-2 position (for the kick off at least) with the following personnel:-

    Freestone
    Todd Mumford Sharp
    Jenkins Phillips Cusack Coates Howard
    Brodie Sidibe

Subs: Jones, O'Leary, Williams, Lacey, Watkin

For the first 15 minutes, it appeared to be all Kidderminster who totally bossed midfield. The main reasons for this were that Cusack and Phillips seemed to be marking each other and were never more than 2 yards apart; Brodie although meant to be up front kept drifting to join up with Cusack and Phillips which had the effect of leaving Sidibe totally isolated.

With no width across midfield, Kidderminster's midfield four stroked the ball around at will and advanced to our penalty area with hardly a challenge. This put extreme pressure on our back line who thought the best tactic to deal with the subsequent through balls was to claim offside.

On the occasions the whistle-happy referee agreed, all was well; but on the other occasions Roger was left exposed with one ones to deal with.

Kidderminster took the lead on 20 minutes from one such move. An innocuous piece of play on our left, saw the ball played through centrally where Henrikson had no trouble in beating the back line to have clear one on one with Roger. Despite spreading himself, the ball found its way into the net off the inside of the post to put Kidderminster 1-0 up.

As Swansea's midfield and formation generally became more ragged, Kidderminster had further gilt-edged opportunities to increase their lead. The best of which, was an uncharacteristic slip by Mumford as the last man to present Henrikson with an easier opportunity than before. But his angle was narrowed again by Freestone and his attempted side-foot across the open area to an unmarked colleague, was snuffed out by an excellent sliding tackle from Todd.

With Swansea looking pretty clueless, aided and abetted by Freestone's dreadful distribution, the equaliser came out of the blue. Some inter-play on the right appeared to have slowed down the direct route via Sidibe and the cross to the far post area looked a second best option where the diminutive Howard was being marked by a much taller opponent.

But instead of waiting for the ball to arrive at his head, Howard took a pace forward to lose his marker and plant a firm header across the 6 yard box with some pace. Todd running in, met it perfectly and powerfully with his head to bury the ball in the back of the net.

Todd's celebrations were a joy to see - and a clear manifestation of the exorcism of all the doubts he has experienced since being left out of team.

Kidderminster continued to look the more dangerous team and had we gone in 3-1 down at the break, it wouldn't have been unfair.

Surprisingly the team were greeted with boos as they trudged off for half-time, surprising because this was Swansea's hard-core support coming out to support their club.

Half-time around the back, pundits were in full flow with "dreadful" and "clueless" being bandied about.

Second half saw Coates replaced by Watkin and what a difference it made. Suddenly there was a shape and a purpose to the team. Sidibe who had been largely anonymous first half, now came into the game in the knowledge that he had an idea of what was going to happen next.

Shots rained in from Cusack, Sharp and Watkin but it was Todd in a forward position again that set up the winner. A ball (corner?) across from the right was half cleared where Todd attempted an overhead bicyle kick at goal. His shot lacked pace to trouble the keeper but his quick thinking allowed Sharp to capitalise from 2 yards out by hooking the ball into the top corner of the net with his back half turned to goal.

After that Kidderminster never really threatened and Swansea saw out the match in some comfort.

Todd was awarded the sponsors Man of the Match, which I wouldn't argue with, but my choice would have been Steve Watkin despite only playing 45 minutes.

Although not pretty, this was the result we needed. Another 3 points on Friday and we can go back to speculating on who we should get rid of for next season J
