Orient who had only managed 1 point form a possible 18 in their last 6 matches, snatched a dramatic 1-0 victory in added time at the Vetch Field this afternoon. The match played in glorious sunshine in front of a supportive 3605 crowd was a huge disappointment. One radio commentator even went on record to say it was the worst football match he'd ever witnessed. Few of the 3605 would disagree with him.
Swansea lined up with their now familiar 3-5-2 formation:
Orient edged the first half but both teams found it difficult to string more than 2 passes together. A good indication of how poor a game is, is when the crowd start chanting "xxxx give us a wave." I don't know if there are any stattos out there who keep a record of such things, but there were only 15 minutes on the watch when the first one was heard. Neither keeper had a save to make in the first half – so poor was the standard of football. Most of the crowd's efforts were directed at Petty and Lewis – neither of whom were there, and the sporting Orient crowd who had brought along their own "Petty Out" banner were warmly applauded too. In a bid to change things, the Swansea management team replaced De-Vulgt with Keegan at half-time, but to be fair, De-Vulgt was only one of a number ineffective Swans players in that first half. The latter part of the game saw the play open up a little and it was Swansea who looked the more likely to score. Best opportunity fell to Tyson from a Coates corner. Tyson got up well and directed his header downwards, but somehow the Orient keeper managed to scoop it off his line with his left hand and it was booted clear to safety.
Two further Swansea substitutions were made – Appleby for Tyson and Mumford for Cusack but the game appeared to be heading for a deserved stalemate. The 4th official held up the board to indicate 3 minutes as the ball flashed past him down the Orient left wing. O'Leary was smartly across to slide tackle the ball into touch 10 yards from the corner flag. From the throw-in, the ball was floated across into the goalmouth where Freestone could only punch the ball clear to the edge of his box. Unfortunately Minton executed a perfect volley which had Roger diving low to the foot of his post, but his parry couldn't stop the ball ending up in the net. This was a passionless game. I'm not saying the players weren't trying because they were, but the fact that there were no yellow cards backs up my comment about passion.
It would be unfair to comment on individual player performances - perhaps there are some reading this who've had the personal worry of illness or of a partner or parent - and know how hard it is to concentrate at work under such conditions. I expect it's the same sort of situation for many of the players on show today. Uncertainty and worry is getting to them. So where do we go from here? It doesn't take me to tell you. A quick look at the league table sees us 1 point off bottom. Today the management picked their strongest available 11 and it wasn't good enough to see off a team that has drawn 1 and lost 5 of its last 6. With rumours circulating about Roger's impending departure this week - the only bright spot would be the return of Jason Smith - but as soon as he's match fit, expect to see him leave on the "Quick buck" conveyor belt as well.
The future's grim - the future's Petty. |
