  • Lister's view - Gary Martin

With the East Stand and Centre Stand looking less crowded than the Directors Box, it looked like a disappointing crowd - especially when you consider that Plymouth brought at least 400 with them.

The crowd when it was finally announced was 4060.

From what I gather there were no local league matches taking place on Ashleigh Road tonight, so the myth that there are a thousand or so die hard fans unable to attend matches because of these games was surely blown wide open tonight.

The 3500 Swans fans there tonight - are all there are - especially while we continue to lose matches. The consortium needs to base its projections on this 3500 figure if it is to deal in reality.

The match went ahead on a perfect surface after the threatened rain had held off all day.

Addison made a few changes - some expected and some unexpected; Sidibe replaced John Williams up front and Todd replaced O'Leary at the heart of the defence.

    The full team:

    Freestone
    Evans Todd Mumford Sharp Howard
    Cusack Coates
    Brodie
    Watkin Sidibe

Subs: Jones J, O'Leary, Lacey, Williams, Jenkins.

The first 10 minutes or so, saw Swansea afford too much respect to their table-topping opponents, and during this time, we often had 11 men within 30 yards of our own goal. Plymouth piled on the pressure with crosses and corners but the first real scare came from one of our own.

Nick Cusack in his "I must be all over the field" mode, was guilty of getting in the way of his central defenders and his mistimed header went agonisingly close to wrong footing Freestone for an own goal.

This is a failing Cusack has exhibited lately at both ends of the field. In the last home game it was knocking his own forwards out of the way in his eagerness to cover as much ground as possible. A thoughtful and structured approach would surely be of more benefit to the team Nick?

Swansea's first opening came around 10 minutes into the game when Watkin's deft glancing header played Sidibe in on goal, but Larrieu in the Plymouth goal was quickly off his line to smother the chance.

Minutes later, Coates pirouetted ballet style to beat two players in the space of a yard, to set Brodie through on goal but his weak shot was easily dealt with by the giant Plymouth goalie.

Plymouth continued to edge the possession in keeping with their league position but for all that there was little between the teams.

Mr Tomlin from E Sussex was one of the better referees I've seen this year although he did miss quite a few obvious decisions. One which incensed the crowd was the handled clearance by a Plymouth player, which fell to a colleague who repeated the offence - only for Watkin to be pulled up in the same move for likewise "chancing his arm!"

Swans forged another attack and Watkin forced Larrieu into a save which led to a corner and Sidibe saw his header from five yards saved by the boot of Beswetherick.

With half time approaching, it looked like a 0-0 especially after Todd had been put through on goal and seen his shot smothered.

But on 38 minutes it was Plymouth who took the lead. A cross from the right saw our central defenders rather flat-footed and unable to get the ball away. The return ball from the left saw little improvement on this front and a poor header saw the ball fall for manager's son Sturrock to place the ball in the top corner of Roger's net.

Swansea forced a couple of corners before the half came to an end but nothing came of these.

    Half-time 0-1

Within two minutes of the restart, Brodie? latched onto a loose ball in the area but his shot was parried by an outsretched Larieu who made himself as big a barrier as possible as he shot.

Swansea continued to dominate the second half with Plymouth happy to defend deep and soak up the pressure. Several corners and crosses came to naught mainly due to a lack of quality but one shot through a ruck of players saw Larrieu stick out a foot at the very last minute to prevent an equaliser sneaking in at the foot of the post.

With all the Swansea pressure it was inevitable that Plymouth would have a chance and what a golden one it was. When the ball broke to the halfway line it was 2 Plymouth forwards against one Swansea defender. A simple draw and pass saw Evans advance unchallenged on Swansea goal but Roger delayed his lunge and forced him wide before making the save of the match.

Williams replaced Watkin and Jenkins replaced Coates for the last 20 minutes.

After more frantic attacking from Swansea, Sharp saw his shot hit the angle of the bar and post with Larrieu beaten. At this point we knew the game was up and we weren't going to score.

Nevertheless it was disappointing to see Plymouth resort to blatant time-wasting tactics which saw two of their players booked in the final 5 minutes.

A match that could have ended 3-3 but in all fairness should have ended 0-0.

    Player ratings:

Freestone 7 - one good save and some wayward defensive kicking in a relatively untroubled match
Evans 6 - crosses lacked quality as did some of his distribution
Sharp 7 - some quality tackles especially one on Evans in the 1st half but distribution woeful
Todd 6 - got into some good forward positions but struggled to command aerially on a number of crosses
Mumford 7 - wasted in this position unless we keep clean sheets
Howard 7 - had quite a good game for me
Cusack 6 - gave 100% but off the pace
Coates 8 - alternated between ballet and Kung Fu in his styles tonight - best game for ages
Brodie 6 - flatters to deceive as usual. Busy and actionlike with no end product
Watkin 6 - must take responsibilty for shooting when in good positions himself. Passed the buck too much
Sidibe 6 - needs games under his belt but was closely marked by 2 players most of the time

The subs: Didn't get into the game much.

There seems to be an air of we're too good to go down amongst the fans, but 5 consecutive defeats only takes you one direction in the table.
