Saturday 24th August 2002
Swansea City v Hull City

Swansea 1 Hull 1

South Wales Echo

SWANSEA almost snatched a lead in the fifth minute. John Williams broke free on the right but the ex-Cardiff City striker whipped right side ball was narrowly missed by a loitering Lee Jenkins at the far post.

Battling Swansea were edging the early attrition but the Tigers should have been in front on 15 minutes.

Ryan Williams played in Stuart Green, the borrowed Newcastle man side-footing wide of a gaping net. But Hull were ahead three minutes from the half-hour.

Phil Jevons cut inside O'Leary on the edge of the area before beating a sprawling Roger Freestone with a crisp left-foot finish.

HT: Hull City 1, Swansea City 0.

However, Swansea, who hadn't scored in over six hours of League action, were back on level terms just seven minutes after the restart.

Williams' long throw from the right was helped on by David Theobald and former Wales Under-21 international James Thomas powered into the net at the near post.

Swansea battled for a 1-1 draw at Hull to drag themselves from the foot of the table.

There were soon warning signs for Hull when Lee Jenkins missed an open goal after only three minutes.

Hull had another escape when John Anderson headed off the line from Jamie Thomas and went straight up the field to take the lead in the 26th minute.

Stuart Green found Phil Jevons who guided the ball past Roger Freestone. Hull keeper Paul Musselwhite pulled off a great save from Dave Theobald to enable Hull to change ends a goal up.

Thomas equalised with a header soon after half-time to end his teams' 369-minute goal drought.

Swansea started to dominate with Steve Watkin and Damian Lacey failing to find the target as Hull's defence started to wobble.

Chris O'Leary cleared off the line from Simon Johnson as Hull had a spell of pressure. But Watkin almost clinched full points for Swansea when his close range shot had Musselwhite scrambling to smother in on the line.
