Neath 2 Swansea 2

Report written By the Famous Five

A decent sized crowd gathered on a pleasant evening to watch this friendly match between the Swans and Neath at the picturesque ground at Llandarcy. The game was played in three 30-minute segments, and gave Brian Flynn the opportunity to observe most of the squad members, some of whom had not tasted first team football for a little while.

The Swans fielded a strong line-up despite Thomas, Freestone, Watkins, Evans, Jenkins and Howard not taking part. Jason Smith was still sidelined but Mumford was in the side, and hopefully this marks the start of the road for his return to form as well as fitness.

The appearance of Jonathan Coates seemed to confirm the recent rumours that he was back in contention for a contract of some nature.

Neath proved to be an accomplished side, and as has been their want this season, the Swans didn't always find the pace and width easy to deal with. The pace of the game did allow the Swans to play some nice football on occasions, but they certainly didn't have the game all their own way.

A good move led to the Swans taking the lead in the first session through a nice finish from Wood. The Neath keeper made a couple of good saves before this, and after, and the Neath woodwork also kept the scoreline down.

Neath equalised in the second period, with a fine header when the Neath player stole in behind Leigh De Vulgt, before Jonathan Keaveny regained the lead through a well struck penalty, given by the Amman Tours official for handball, which made the little girl in pink on her father's shoulders behind the goal rock a little. Neath again pulled back on level terms through a well taken goal and some shaky defending, in the same period, and the game was played out through the final third to a 2-2 conclusion.

Towards the end of the game there was a bizarre pitch invasion by a couple protesting at the quality of the car parking by certain spectators, and while the gentleman secured some excellent close up pictures of the players, peacemaker Wayne Davies coaxed the lady involved from the field.

This was a well worth exercise you would imagine for Brian Flynn, the coaches and the players. He will gain more from a competitive match like this, against sensible opposition who wanted to play good football, than from work outs on the training field. It gave the players the chance to sharpen up, get somewhere towards match fitness (for those who haven't played recently, and maybe even some who have) and show the new boss what they can do. It allowed Flynn the chance to try different combinations of players, although interval changes weren't overboard, and it will be interesting to see his team selections for the next couple of games.

Hopefully this idea can be repeated throughout the season, as apart from being an enjoyable game to watch at close quarters, it was a very pleasant and relaxed social event. The digital cameras were out in force tonight, so we can safely assume that the future of the Caption Competition is secure.

No player ratings tonight, and very little criticism, it just wasn't that sort of evening.
