Bury 2 v 0 Swansea City

Report by Richard Major, Pics by Andrew Thomas and Dai Smith

Just got back from Bury. What can I say? It was dire today.

We started brightly, Robinson after a couple of minutes with a drive at goal from distance which the keeper did well to push away, followed by some good pressure with about 3 corners on the trot.

After that, though, rubbish. We couldn't play the ball to feet, deciding to play head tennis with a Bury team on average 6 inches taller than us. They were first to every ball, won every 50/50 tackle, and blatantly wanted it more. Bury missed three absolute sitters in the first half, (one from about five yards with an empty net in front of him) and we were lucky to get into half time all square.

The second half was more head tennis, but with the ball going just a little higher in the air. Their first goal came from a corner - flicked on at the near post before being well put away by Danny Swailes. The second was just embarrasing, with Freestone caught in no mans land and lobbed from about 25 yards. We never looked like scoring - and looked even less like scoring once Trundle was subbed for Thomas, leaving the totally ineffective Nugent on the pitch. Go figure?

Duffy's sending off was awful. He went in to the tackle two footed, studs up and with knees bent, straightening his leg during the tackle. 'd like to see it again on TV, as I'm not sure from where I saw it whether Duffy actually caught the Bury player, but he certainly went down hard and writhed in agony for ages (before getting up and jogging away with seemingly no ill effects shortly after.) However, Duffy can have no complaints as if he goes into a tackle like that as he leaves the ref with no option but to produce the red

Someone posted a little while earlier that we are a collection of good individuals, but not a team. That was certaintly true today. I thought Izzy played a blinder - especially in the first half. One time a Bury player broke clear at the half way line and was bearing quickly down on goal. Izzy was charging hard at an angle and timed his tackle from the side to perfection. He also made a number of key blocks and interceptions throughout the game.

However, the defense as a unit was awful. Roger was slow and unconvincing, O'leary was average, and I'm not sure after 90 minutes who was meant to be at left back to replace Hylton or Howard, as they went AWOL repeatedly. Its been said many times that our left back is exposed from not having a proper left winger in front of him, but trust me its worse when we have no left winger or left back in the team...

Britton also looked lively and made some nice runs, but was often taken out by the Bury players. Our premiership ref (!) awarded us a number of free kicks in promising positions as a result (but not many bookings), which were wasted by Robinson with low drives into the wall or directly at the keeper. However, can I suggest to Flynn that we get Britton some new training aids - I propose a cow, a banjo and some extra time on the training pitch.

Robinson as usual was busy all over the pitch and looked like the player most likely to score.

Martinez didn't make a huge impact when he came on - although they scored very shortly after he swapped for Johnrose. This, though, may be a sign of the midfield Flynn has in mind when fully fit, with Robinson, Britton, Martinez and Maylett (when he's not injured...what is wrong with him this time?)

Ratings, anyway:

Freestone 4 - not commanding, not impressive, very slow. Couple of good saves though.
Duffy 6 - looked good, until he spoilt it
Izzy 8.5 - couldn't get a 9, as we conceded 2 goals (!) - but thought he was awesome today.
O'Leary 6 - did a job. But not that well.
Jones 5 - I think he was playing
Johnrose 6 - got stuck in in midfield. Gave us a bit of fight.
Durkan 3 - knows where the sideline is. Doesn't move from it. Just doesn't move at all. Pointless.
Robinson 7 - busy and looked threatening. Wasted some good free kick opportunities though.
Britton 7 - some good runs. Tried hard. Never looked like scoring though.
Trundle 4 - did nothing today bar one backheel on the edge of area for the benefit of Soccer AM. Went into touch. More likely to feature on "Taxi" than "showboating".
Nugent 4 - nuff said.
