Cambridge Utd 0 - 1 Swansea City

Report and Match Pics by Dai Smith

After the indifferent performance at Loftus Road during the week the Swans needed to bounce back against a goal shy Cambridge side who hadn't managed a goal in over three and a half hours of football.

Kenny Jackett rang the changes in both personnel and tactics, with Martinez reinstated into the starting line up and Forbes and Nugent making way for Maylett and Connor. There was also a first start for Iriekpen. The formation also appeared to me to be an unconventional 4-3-1-2, with Robinson slotting in behind the front two.

The Swans lined up

Gueret
Tate - Monk - Iriekpen - Ricketts
Maylett - Martinez - O'Leary
Robinson
Trundle - Connor

Subs: Murphy - Nugent - Forbes - Britton - Fisken -

The match started brightly for the opposition with a long range effort from Nicholls going wide. Two or three more chances also fell their way before the Swans seem to get into their stride. A clumsy challenge on Andy Robinson after 20 mins left a free kick opportunity well within his range. He sent his shot only inches wide of the goalkeeper's right hand post.

The next chance fell to Cambridge when Gueret rushed out of his area to be first to a through ball, only for his clearance to fall straight to Cambridge striker Guttridge, who attempted a long-range chip. Fortunately this went high and wide.

The breakthrough came shortly afterwards when a long clearance from Gueret was weakly headed away only to find Trundle on the edge of the "D". His looping shot crashed into the top of the net. I was so delighted, I threw my arms into the air and managed to lose grip of my mobile phone, which went 20 feet into the air and land about 10 yards back (with no ill effect ;-] )

On about the hour mark Forbes and Britton replaced Robinson and Maylett.
The Swans had a number of chances to increase their lead with both Trundle and Iriekpen going close.

But the hero of the match was certainly Willy Gueret who produced about 4 quality saves in the last 10 mins to ensure we came home with the points.

The keeper gathered a low drive at the second attempt and shortly afterwards held on to a stinging shot when left exposed. The travelling Jacks also enjoyed his performance with chants of 'Big Willy, Big Willy' and 'La Marseillaise'.

Comments

A dogged gritty performance, with much more of the team spirit that has seemed to be lacking in the first few games. It appears that the played believe in the formation and it showed. Mentions must be given to Trundle for his brilliant finish and Big Willy for his second half heroics.
