Swansea City 2 Scunthorpe 0

Swansea City 2 Scunthorpe 0 - Match Report - Nigel Gigg

After no football for what seems like an eternity, it was back to League action tonight for the visit of Scunthorpe. Scunthorpe, after an excellent start to the season, have had a poor run of late in the League and went into tonight's game in 15th place. They included 40 year old Peter Beagrie in midfield and dangerman Billy Sharp up front.

Roberto Martinez returned to the centre of midfield in place of Kristian O'Leary and Andy Robinson got his first League start at the Liberty Stadium in place of the injured Kevin McLeod.

Side- Gueret, Tate, Monk, Iriekepen, Ricketts, Britton, Martinez, Jones, Robinson, Akinfenwa, Trundle. Subs- Austin, O'Leary, Forbes, Goodfellow, Connor.

Scunthorpe set their stall out early with some rugged defending and they defended in great numbers leaving their teenage strike force of Sharp and Keogh isolated. However, it was they that had the games first chancewith an overhit Izzy Iriekepen backpass almost beating Willy Gueret in the swansea goal.

Swans were trying hard but despite prompting from Leon Britton and Andy Robinson were unable to threaten the Scunthorpe goal.

Scunthorpe's physical approach brought head injuries to Owain Jones and Adebayo Akinfenwa and Bayo's cut eye saw him leave the field for around 6 minutes whilst he received stitches.

Scunthorpe had come looking for the 0-0 result and their tactics frustrated Swansea who didn't mount any challenge on the Scunthorpe goal for the first 33 minutes. The first chance came from a corner that Adebayo Akinfenwa headed goalward. His header was only partially cleared by the defender on the line and

goalkeeper Tom Evans was forced to tip the ball over the bar at the expense of a second corner.

Andy Robinson then created a chance for himself. After winning a bone crunching challenge near the touchline, he made a direct run at goal with defenders failing to get a challenge in. His eventual shot from 20 yards was straight at Evans but was dipping and bending and Evans could only parry clear with the ball only just evading Leon Britton.

On the stroke of half time Alan Tate totally underhit a back pass that was never going to reach Willy. Izzy Iriekepen was the closest player and should have cleared the danger, but he was caught sleeping allowing the excellent Andy Keogh to collect the goal and bear down on Willy. Izzy made excellent ground to block Keogh's shot.

Scunthorpe would have been well satisfied to have allowed Swans just 2 shots at goal in the first period and Kenny Jackett must have contemplated a change at half time.

Swans looked much brighter at the start of the second half and on 50 minutes Lee Trundle produced his first piece of magic getting in a shot that Evans did well to save, when nothing had looked on.

Two minutes later and Swans took the lead with a goal of real quality that involved half the outfield players. Leon Britton won the ball in the right back spot just yards from the corner flag. He tried to get forward but was being fouled from behind. Rather than go down for the free kick he back healed the ball into the path of Alan Tate. Tatey floated a ball just over the half way line toward Lee Trundle. Trunds won an aerial challenge and flicked the ball on to Bayo. He took just one touch to free Leon on the right wing. Leon made straight for the Scunthorpe goal but was forced wide by a covering defender. He ran right to the bye line and pulled the ball back perfectly for Andy Robinson to score from 10 yards out. It was an absolute classic and all 5 players involved played their part to perfection.

The goal lifted both the players and the crowd and Scunthorpe looked rattled for the first time.

Owain jones almost extended the lead with a powerful header that looked goalbound only to hit Lee Trundle on the back of the head. AdebayoAkinfenwa almost and perhaps should have scored with a clear header that beat Evans but landed on the roof of the net.

Despite Swans now dominating possesion, Scunthorpe still looked capable of scoring and 40 year old Peter Beagrie almost scored with a 25 yard shot that flashed just wide.

Lee Trundle had a chance with a 30 yard free kick that he hit perfectly but Evans anticipated well and caught the ball just under the bar.

Andy Robinson limped off with 10 minutes to go to be replaced by Adrian Forbes. As soon as Forbes took up his position on the left their was a mix up between him and Sam Ricketts that allowed Scunthorpe substitute Cleveland Taylor to race away down the wing. His excellent cross across the six yard box beat both Willy and Scunthorpe's other substitute Wayne Corden who dived in and appeared just inches away of scoring the equaliser.

With 5 minutes to go and Scunthorpe looking more and more likely to score, Swans broke clear. Lee Trundle led the line and with Bayo and Forbes arriving alongside him, Trunds beat the offside with a perfectly timed and weighted through ball to Adrian Forbes. He made no mistake with an excellent shot that gave Evans no chance.

At 2-0 there was no coming back for scunthorpe and Lee Trundle had a chance to make it 3-0 but his shot was well ssaved by Evans.

After Oldham had stolen a point with similar tactics, it was especially pleasing to beat Scunthorpe. Three more points and a clean sheet and Swans proudly remain top of Division One.
