SWANS THROUGH IN CUP DERBY - Evening Post

The all-Welsh FA Cup first-round clash between Newport County and Swansea City was hit by an eight-minute delay as fourth official Alan Sheffield was rushed to hospital after being struck by a coin.

The incident occurred after 32 minutes of Swansea's 3-1 win when Sheffield signalled to referee Tony Bates after allegedly being verbally abused by County manager Peter Beadle.

As a defiant Beadle made his way to the stand, the Walsall official collapsed after being hit by the coin. A delay followed as he was carried off and taken to an awaiting ambulance.

Lee Trundle had given Swansea the lead after seven minutes, breaking the offside trap before rounding Mark Ovendale to slot into an empty net.

Izzy Iriekpen added to the visitors' tally after 30 minutes when he found space at the back post to head home Andy Robinson's free-kick.

The eight-minute delay failed to affect Swansea's momentum as Leon Britton struck in the last minute of the half to give his side a comfortable 3-0 lead.

Newport emerged resurgent after the break and got their reward four minutes into the restart when Ian Hillier stabbed home from close range despite the best efforts of Swans keeper Willy Gueret.

Clearly lifted, Newport continued to press, but they failed to put the visiting defence under any more real pressure, leaving Swansea to take their place in the next round.
