Swansea City 0 Tranmere Rovers 0 - Match Report Nigel Gigg, Pictures Gary Martin

It seems Kenny Jackett now knows what Swansea City's problem has been. It's a lack of consistency apparently. Well blow me down, none of us had realised that. That's why he's in football management and the rest of us just turn up week in week out paying out hard earned money to watch our team.

Now Kenny knows were the problem lies can he put it right. Well he certainly had a tough test in 5th place Tranmere, who started tonight just four points but seven places clear of the Swans.

Lee Trundle returned from injury to a place on the bench, but the biggest surprise was the return of Willy Gueret in goal after Andy Oakes has had just two starts and certainly hasn't disgraced himself.

With Dennis Lawrence away on international duty, Kevin Amankwaah returned to the left back spot and Alan Tate moved to centre half.

Side- Gueret, Amankwaah, Tate, Iriekepen, Williams, Britton, Pratley, Way, Robinson, Fallon, Knight. Subs- Oakes, Austin, MacDonald, Butler, Trundle.

Willy Gueret was Swans saviour as early as the 3rd minute after a dreadful mistake by Izzy Iriekepen presented Chris Greenacre with a terrific opportunity from just 12 yards out. Willy was quickly off his line and did well to block Greenacre's shot.

Swans bounced back and looked a real threat going forward. In the 7th minute, after a good passing movement, Leon Britton beat his full back and delivered an excellent cross which was met by the head of Rory Fallon. Fallon's header seemed destined for the corner of the net but ex Cardiff keeper Gavin Ward dived full length to claw the ball behind for a corner.

Swans had a good shout for a penalty just a minute later when Leon Britton was upended just inside the area. Referee Mr Probert gave nothing other than a word to Leon Britton presumably along the lines of 'I don't give penalties in the first 15 minutes'.

Swans were looking threatening and Leon Knight had a free header but failed to find the target with just Ward to beat.

Despite dominating possession Swans defensive frailties were again exposed on 18 minutes when a near post header was met by Tranmere centre half Shane Sheriff. His header struck the post with Willy well beaten. Meanwhile his marker Tom Williams was rooted to the spot admiring the quality of the header.

Williams almost earned a reprieve with a free kick from 25 yards that was only just over the bar and landed on the roof of the net.

Tranmere had their own penalty appeal turned down after Darren Way seemed to bring down Steve Davies after another howler from Izzy Iriekepen.

Despite playing the better football and dominating possession, the defensive mistakes were providing Tranmere with the clearer chances and the defensive mishaps knocked the confidence of the Swans players who started to resort to long balls down the middle of the field. With Rory Fallon playing deeper and deeper to try to link play up this all too often meant high balls were played down the middle to Leon Knight who was surrounded by three defenders.

Deep into injury time Swans were inches from taking the lead when a Leon Britton cross was headed across the goal and with Darren Way looking favourite to score Tranmere's John Mullin made an excellent clearance.

So Swans went in 0-0 in a game were they dominated possession but had gifted numerous chances to Tranmere that they had spurned.

Swans looked disjointed again at the start of the second half despite the urgings of the home fans.

Rory Fallon had two headers that went close before Andy Robinson had the easiest of chances created by Darren Pratley. From just 6 yards out he blasted the ball over the bar when with even a touch of precision he could have virtually walked the ball in.

On 62 minutes Kenny Jackett made two substitutions bringing on Shaun MacDonald and Lee Trundle for Leon Britton and Leon Knight. The crowd reacted with anger and dismay to the withdrawal of Britton who despite drifting out of things in the first half was just beginning to cause Tranmere problems down the Swans right hand side. Knight could also consider himself unlucky after lacking any sort of support.

The substitutions seemed to have a pretty much negative effect with MacDonald hardly involved at all and Trundle looking a little rusty.

Lee Trundle did create one chance for Andy Robinson which he fired wide with his left foot and Shaun MacDonald did go close with a 30 yard drive. That apart Swans create nothing and Ward was hardly troubled at all.

Tranmere earned a total of five bookings and their time wasting tactics were tedious to say the least. Mr Probert allowed Ward in particular to waste time throughout and annoyingly only showed him the yellow card with five minutes left.

It was a measure of Swans lack of ideas and creativity that in the last two minutes of full time and the three minutes of injury time Swans only managed to get the ball into the Tranmere half twice. We could have played three hours injury time and I'm not sure we would have scored.

So the pressure will mount again on Kenny Jackett. He didn't help himself again with fairly negative substitutions tonight. With Tranmere playing just one up front he could easily have gone to three at the back and played Lee Trundle behind the front two. At the moment it seems Kenny is running out of ideas and he looks also to be running out of time.

Gueret 7 - Quiet time, one or two good blocks but failed to come out for a few balls that were really his.

Amankwaah 5 - Hardly pressurised in defence and offered very little going forward.
Tate 8 - Didn't put a foot wrong all night.
Iriekepen 4 - Usually makes one bad error a game. Must have made 4 or 5 tonight.
Williams 6 - Totally asleep when Tranmere hit the post but otherwise did OK.

Britton 7 - In fairness to Kenny Jackett, Leon was in and out of the game. However, he was a far greater threat than Andy Robinson tonight and was unlucky to be substituted.
Pratley 6 - Again always an outlet for those in possession but never seems to know what to do with the ball.
Way 7 - Pushed Alan Tate for MOM.
Robinson 4- Missed a sitter and never got going tonight.

Fallon 5 - Continually dropping back to try to link play up.
Knight 5 - Isolated for most of the game.

Subs
MacDonald 5 - Hardly had a kick. The crowd's reaction to Leon Britton going off could well have knocked his confidence.
Trundle 5 - A couple of flashes of brilliance but way off the pace at the moment.
