Neath 1 Swansea City 5
Neath 1 Swansea City 5 - Report and Pictures Dai Smith

A fairly healthy crowd of around 2,000 on a fine evening saw the Swans coast to a 5-1 win against Neath Athletic.
Roberto Martinez fielded two different sides in either half. The first half saw the Swans line up

Willy Gueret
Painter Austin Graves Rangel
Britton Pratley Collins Robinson
Trundle Bussy

The Swans were out of the blocks quickly and had a goal in the first couple of minutes from an unlikely source. A cross from the right from Leon Britton was buried into the far corner by Kevin Austin.

A long period of domination followed with the Swans forcing a great many corners and a few smart saves from their keeper. Trundle looked sharp and alert, with Bussy making some nice runs and Trundle seeming to attract the kicks of the Neath defence. The second goal was from one of these fouls, conceded on the edge of the box. Trundle dusted himself down and curled the ball into the top corner. This seemed to spur Neath into their best period of the game.

The final 10 minutes or so of the half saw Neath have two shots and one header on goal – all saved very well by Gueret.

Player Comments

Gueret - Made a couple of excellent saves. Faultless performance.
Painter - Neat enough
Austin - Played well at centre half - even popped up with a goal.
Graves - Played both halves at centre half. The lad has filled out in the close season and is starting to look the part.
Rangel - Some neat touches
Britton - Nice first half from Leon, it will be interesting to see if he maintains his spot ahead of Anderson
Pratley - Looked sharp
Collins - I was quite impressed with him, nice runs, good movement
Robinson - Looked fit enough, but on a few occasions today, took the wrong option of a shot when team mates were much better placed.
Trundle - Think Trunds will have sore legs this evening - he took a bit of a kicking from the Neath defence, but still took a nice goal and looked the biggest threat up front in the first half.
Bussy - Good movement, quite quick, first touch let him down a couple of time tonight though.

The second half saw a different team take the field - ten changes in all.

DeVries
Tate Monk Graves Price
Anderson Bodde Craney McDonnald
Thiam Duffy

We were soon 3 up when Duffy carried on from were he left off last season and buried the ball low into the corner. Swansea continued to dominate with both Anderson and Bodde impressing.

A chance for the Senegalese trialist was squandered when it looked easier for him to score with a point blank header. Unfortunately for him, he managed to put his effort over the bar. Another run from him saw some nice close control but his shot was nearer the corner flag than the goals. A mistake from Garry Monk saw the only blot on the copybook tonight and saw the Neath centre forward place the ball past DeVries into the corner. Swansea however had the last word, when a deflected effort from the impressive Anderson found the corner of the net to make the score 5-1.

Player Comment
DeVries - A lot more vocal than Willy, but had little to do in the second half.
Tate - Nice game from Tatey, another interesting competition for the right-back shirt this season.
Monk - Played OK, but made two mistakes - one of which cost us a goal
Graves - see first half comments
Price - Trialist from Birmingham - Emmanuel Petit hairstyle, showed some neat touches and was eager for the ball
Anderson - Class act, very quick - can't wait to see him tear up some of the League One full backs
Bodde - My Man of the Match, looks like the lad has it all. Short and long passing, aggression, nice free kick and is quite quick too.
Craney - Normal Craney performance, workmanlike but unspectacular. Had a great chance to break his Swans goal duck, but blew it.
McDonnald - Tried hard enough, but nothing seemed to come off for him tonight.
Thiam - Ooops, last Swans game I fear
Duffy - Carried on from where he left off last season, looks sharp
