Match report

Carlisle 4 - 1 Swansea

07-09-1996

Carlisle 4 (3) - 1 (1) Swansea

.

Swansea's worst start to a season for ten years continued with a 4-1 thrashing at Brunton Park against Carlisle. They have now gone six games without a win.

The Swans lined up without suspended player-manager Jan Molby but stunned the Cumbrians on nine minutes.

Richard Appleby's in-swinging corner caught the Carlisle defence asleep and David Thomas headed past Tony Caig.

Steve Hayward brought Carlisle level in the 17th minute with a superb 30-yard volley before United went in front. Paul Conway headed home from Owen Archdeacon's free-kick on 32 minutes.

It was 3-1 five minutes later when David Rees crossed for Warren Aspinall to head home. Archdeacon completed the rout with a perfectly flighted free-kick.

Two dismissals marred an entertaining game. Aspinall went for using his elbow and five minutes later Steve Torpey received his marching orders after a vicious tackle on Dean Walling.
