Match report

Wednesday 14th May, 1997
Swansea City 3 v 0 Chester City

Swansea City 3 v 0 Chester City

Swansea totally overwhelmed a clueless Chester who played most of the match with 10 men.
Carl Heggs almost put Swansea ahead after 3 minutes when he raced between defender and goalie only to see his shot rebound off the inside of the post back into the keeper's arms.

Next incident was a combined clearance by Kwame Ampadu and Steve Jones which left Jones with what looked to be a very bad break to his lower leg. It took 10 minutes for the game to restart while an ambulance was driven onto the pitch.
This necessitated a reshuffle with Penney dropping to right back and Shaun Chapple coming on his place. This change hardly handicapped the Swans who poured forward onto the Chester goal.

There were 3 goal-line clearances before the Swans took the lead from a corner. A powerful downward header by Dai Thomas gave the keeper no chance and sent my brother into ecstasy as he had put money on Thomas to be the first scorer at 12/1. Odds of 12/1 for a striker? Joe Coral obviously doesn't rate Psycho.
Almost immediately afterwards Torpey doubled Swansea's lead with a bullet header from 12 yards out after excellent work down the left by Moreira and Coates.

As news filtered through that Cardiff were 1-0 down an enjoyable half-time passed discussing the visit to Wembley.
Swansea had numerous opportunities in the second half as Chester pushed forward trying to salvage the match. It was Heggs who was next to get his name on the scoreboard with a rasping drive from 10 yards out after Kwame Ampadu had successfully bustled for a loose ball on the edge of the area.

Coates hit the post, Brown was clean through on a number of occasions and Thomas was also wasteful with good chances.
