Mark Clode was left with a red face when he headed the most spectacular goal of the match - at the wrong end.

The defender virtually killed of Swansea's hopes by putting the ball past his own keeper Roger Freestone shortly before the interval.

The Welsh team were trailing by a single goal at that stage, and with skipper Shaun Garnett urging them forward they lookd set for an equaliser.

The first goal had come from Darren Roberts after 19 minutes and he added another early in the second half to put the result beyond doubt.

Swansea's best effort of the match came from player-manager Jan Molby who hammered a volley from outside the area early on but saw it tipped over the bar by keeper Paul Newell.

Richard Appleby was Swansea's biggest hope as he made a string of forceful runs down the right wing to ruffle the Darlington defence.

But the nearest his effort's came to success was a pinpoint cross which was headed tamely wide by David Thomas.

Darlington wrapped it up with a fourth goal from Mike Oliver before substitute Linton Brown hit a late consolation for Swansea.
