Swansea 2 - 2 HartlepoolFootball League Two Swansea 2 Thomas 19 Appleby 58 Hartlepool 2 Howard 17 Howard 63 Vetch Field on 03-05-1997 Richard Appleby scored a vital goal - his first for the club - to earn Swansea a promotion play-off semi-final against Chester. Sunday Mirror, May 4, 1997 Hartlepool United may be 14 places below Swansea City in the Third Division, but a Steven Howard double strike put Swansea on the rack and they were happy to settle for a draw at The Vetch. The Pool took a 17th-minute lead through Howard who scored with a powerful header on the run from Jon Cullen's cross. Loss of concentration led to Swansea's equaliser two minutes later. Richard Appleby's corner bobbed about dangerously in the Hartlepool goalmouth and Dai Thomas headed home. The Swans snatched the lead in the 58th minute with a goal by man- of- the-match Appleby _ his first ever for the Welsh club. He finished off a three-man move to dribble past Ian McGuckin and Glen Davies to drive a low shot just inside the upright for a fine solo effort. But the Pool fought back and Howard volleyed home the equaliser in the 63rd minute from a corner.
