Mansfield Town 0 v 0 Swansea CitySaturday October 12th, 1996Swansea gained a valuable away point, on a ground that they have not won on for 25 years, in a poor quality contest riddled with errors. The only players to come out of this match with any credit were Keith Walker and Mark Clode. Jan Molby rang the changes with his team selection and system. Swansea reverted to a flat back four, with Jonathan Coates given a more attacking role. However, the Mansfield defence - employing a sweeper - were never really threatened until late in the game. It wasn't until 17 year old Ryan Casey came on as a sub for Coates that the Mansfield defence looked suspect. "The best chance fell to Ryan just after he came on and he feels he should have scored," said Molby. Apart from that Swansea created very few openings. David Thomas had a clear run on goal but had neither the pace nor support to take advantage. Carl Heggs could only manage to shoot directly at the keeper when presented with a gilt-edged chance late on. Despite Swansea's lack of opportunity in front of goal, Mansfield rarely troubled Freestone either. A first minute header by Sedgemore almost caught him on the hop and a Simon Wood effort was turned around the post. "There were a lot of mistakes by both teams and you don't need to be a genius to work out why Mansfield and Swansea are near the bottom of the table," said Molby. Team: Freestone, Chapple, Lacey, Walker, Edwards, Jones, Clode, Penney, Torpey, Coates, Thomas. Subs: Heggs (for Thomas 59), Casey (for Coates 75), McDonald.
