Leyton Orient 1 v 0 Swansea City

Tuesday October 1st, 1996

Despite a solid performance through the spine of the team (Freestone, Walker, Molby and Thomas), Swansea failed to carry the below-par performance of the remainder and lost out to an 81st minute goal.

Heggs fluffed a golden opportunity after just 3 minutes and was the only real threat to Orient's goal for the whole 90 mins. Despite having the better of the possession, once Swansea lost the blossoming talents of Lee Jenkins on the half-hour, the midfield rhythm was lost.

Orient's game improved after the break but the Swansea defence looked capable of holding out for a point. But after 81 mins, Ian Hendon, Orient's right back, made a diagonal run across the Swansea defence and the left wing cross was forced home at the far post by David Hanson.

In the remaining minutes Molby took the opportunity to blood yet another YTS recruit - 17 year old Irish prospect Ryan Casey.

Team: Freestone, Chapple, Lacey, Walker, O'Leary, Jones, Jenkins, Penney, Heggs, Molby, Thomas. Subs: Appleby (for Jenkins 32), Casey (for Appleby 84), McDonald (for Thomas 86).
