Williams delivers knockout blow |
| Karl Woodward of the Western Mail writes ... Former Swansea strikers Dai Thomas and John Williams scored a goal apiece to knock their old club out of the FAW Premier Cup at Ninian Park last night. Thomas gave City a 10th-minute lead with his first Ninian Park goal since his £60,000 summer signing from Watford. Julian Alsop put the visitors level three minutes later with his 11th goal of the season. Captain Jeff Eckhardt restored City’s lead after 65 minutes, tapping in from close range after Lee Jarman had headed down a deep in-swinging corner from Andrew Legg. Swansea drew level again after 76 minutes when Ryan Casey beat Seamus Kelly with a low left-footer from 25-yards. But, as the match seemed to be heading for extra time, Thomas supplied the pass for Williams to net the 88th-minute winner. Thomas will never score an easier goal. Matthew Gregg had ample time to clear a back pass from Casey but the 20-year-old ’keeper, on loan from Crystal Palace, completely mis-kicked, allowing Thomas to stroke the ball into an empty net. He celebrated in his usual way, peeling off his shirt and waving it at the City fans. He was promptly booked by Port Talbot referee Alan Howells for ungentlemanly conduct. Alsop would have given Swansea the lead from their first attack but for the vigilance of Kelly. Steve Watkin’s scuffed shot from Alsop’s lay-off fell invitingly for Alsop, whose curling shot was heading for the top corner until Kelly arched backwards to tip it over. However, Kelly, deputising for Jon Hallworth, was powerless to prevent the 6ft 4in Alsop claiming the equaliser with a free header from a perfectly flighted corner by Casey. Two players who began their careers under Frank Burrows when the City manager was at Swansea, combined in the move that almost restored City’s lead. Williams ran on to a return pass from Legg to hit a powerful volley straight at Gregg. Hill was off target with a cross shot and Kris O’Leary fired wide from a rehearsed free-kick. Jonathan Coates, involved in some of Swansea’s best first-half moves, went closest to giving his side an interval lead with a curving shot that was just wide. Alsop and Watkin were replaced by Tony Bird and Jamie Davies after 73 minutes as Swansea went in search of victory. But although Casey put them level for a second time, former postman Williams delivered the killer blow. Click here to go back to start page if not using frames
