Swansea 3 v 0 Millwall

Swansea march on

The Times

SWANSEA gained their first FA Cup victory for almost four years last night when they beat Millwall 3-0 in the first round at the Vetch Field.

Goals from the midfield players, Jason Price and Martin Thomas, inside the first 25 minutes and a third by Julian Alsop, a substitute, in the last seconds settled a tie that was played in monsoon conditions after the interval.

The Nationwide League third division side, managed by John Hollins, put their disappointing league form behind them against second division opponents. They got the ideal start when Price struck at the far post after Aiden Newhouse had tricked his way past Stuart Nethercott.

Robbie Ryan denied Swansea after 21 minutes, when he cleared a flick from Thomas off the line, but Thomas would not be kept out and doubled the lead four minutes later, driving home a pass from Steve Watkin from six yards.

Paul Shaw went close for Millwall, who had Nethercott booked as their frustration mounted in fast-deteriorating conditions..
