Rotherham 1 v 0 Swansea City

Monday 5th April 1999
Cusack off as Swans crash

Rotherham battled their way to three priceless points against fellow promotion rivals Swansea, and complete a 100 percent Easter.

A tension-filled game was settled five minutes after half time by Rotherham's giant striker Leo Fortune-West, with his seventh for the club in a dozen games.

However Swansea complained that he used a hand to take control of Steve Thompson's long throw before turning to fire past Roger Freestone.

Swansea's own big striker Julian Alsop caused Rotherham problems and he twice went close late in the first half with headers.

It was Alsop who forced Mike Pollitt into a second-half save, before Chris O'Leary fired a great chance over the bar.

However the best chance fell to Steve Watkin with fifteen minutes to go and it really should have been the equaliser.

Jason Smith thumped a header from a corner against a post and Watkin turned the rebound wide of the empty net with 'keeper Pollitt stranded.

Swansea thought they had saved a point from their late pressure when Nick Cusack forced the ball home, but the celebrations were cut short when the goal was disallowed for pushing.

And the game ended in more misery for skipper Cusack when he was sent off in stoppage time for a second bookable offence after he had spoken out of turn to the referee's assistant.
