Scarborough 2 v 1 Swansea City

Saturday 20th February 1999
Swans crash to bottom club
Bottom of the league Scarborough pulled off only their eighth win of the season after producing one of their best performances of the campaign.

It emerged during the game that the struggling Seasiders could have a new manager by early this week in Colin Addison the ex-Derby County, West Brom and Hereford manager who watched the game from the directors' box.

Addison said that he would relish the chance of taking the vacant manager's job and would make a decision on Monday as to whether he'd accept the appointment.

City started in fine style with Nick Cusack, Steve Watkin and Jason Smith leading the attack, but it was Scarborough who took the lead against the run of play when Chris Tate ran through, beat two defenders and 'keeper Matthew Gregg to lob the ball into the back of the empty net.

Six minutes later Darren Roberts somersaulted in delight after driving home from the near post after being set-up in a neat move by Steve Brodie and Matthew Russell.

The Swans pulled a goal back on the half-time whistle when Jason Smith headed home a Richard Appleby corner from close range.

For much of the second-half the visitors had the edge with Watkin having a fine chance saved by Mark Goodlad, and Michael Howard having two good efforts well saved by the 'keeper.

Scarborough's joint acting manager Ray McHale said: "We well deserved to be ahead at the break. Swansea came at us hard in the second half but we held on." He added that The Seasiders expect to sign a new goalkeeper within the next few days to replace the young Mark Goodlad, who could do with a rest.
