| Wrexham 0 v 2 Swansea City |
| Woeful show by Wrexham prompts fans' angry reaction | Dave North's Western Mail report
Wrexham-born Steve Watkin made a dream homecoming last night. Watkin scored to put Third Division Swansea City on their way to an impressive win in the FAW Premier Cup at a rainswept Racecourse. Martin Thomas got the other goal with only minutes left and there were angry crowd scenes at the end by Wrexham fans. Brian Flynn’s side was booed off and there were cries of “what a load of rubbish.” The Swans led 1-0 at half time – but it should have been more. Watkin gave them a 21st minute lead but Swansea could have trebled that. Watkin’s goal was down to his predatory instinct after Wrexham ’keeper Mark Cartwright brilliantly kept out Jason Price’s piledriver. It was a fine stop by Cartwright but as Wrexham defenders stood ball watching Watkin pounced. Ian Rush then twice went close to an equaliser and Kevin Russell rifled a shot into the side netting. But Swans also went close to scoring twice in as many minutes. Substitute Richard Appleby’s low shot was on its way in until Cartwright pushed it around a post. Swansea swept forward again minutes later, ripping Wrexham apart. Price delivered a quality ball into the box where Tony Bird made a spectacular diving header that was only just wide. The half-time whistle brought boos from frustrated Wrexham fans but Swansea manager John Hollins was clearly happy with his side’s display. Confident Swansea were first to show from the restart. Watkin got down the left and perhaps Price should have made more of the ball played into him. Wrexham tried to get back into it but nothing, it seemed, went right for them. Roger Freestone made a vital one- handed stop to deny Neil Roberts an equaliser on the hour, but it looked more like luck than judgement. Wrexham replaced Russell with Martyn Chalk and the substitution almost paid off instantly. Gareth Owen’s cross to the far post was nodded down by Chalk but Roberts hurriedly smashed it wide. It was one of Wrexham’s few chances of the night and Roberts, a Wales Under-21 international, knew it. He just held his head in his hands. Freestone’s handling of a ball that must have been like a bar of soap was outstanding. He also made great saves from Owen and Chalk as Wrexham poured forward desperately in search of an equaliser. But it just wouldn’t go in for them and Thomas’s header made it 2-0 four minutes from time and that prompted angry crowd reaction.
