Evening Post report
Cool Walter is Swans hitmanWalter Boyd's cool finish from 12 yards confirmed Swansea City as FAW Premier Cup Group A winners.Swansea are assured of a place in the quarter final where the sponsorship money put up by the BBC begins to look worthwhile. But Swansea only just made it at Caernarfon where they dispatched a less than full strength team in a calculated risk that the youngsters would be good enough to do the job. The fact was that at the end of 90 minutes, there was only one goal in it on a night when the two goalkeepers were not all that busy. Jason Jones for Swansea and Caernarfon counterpart Ray Clifton were underemployed for a large part of the proceedings as the defences carried out their jobs effectively. The pattern of the exchanges was clear enough — early running by Swansea looked attractive and inventive, but got them nowhere, while the Oval part-timers battled stoutly. Whereas the young Swans took the first half on points by a clear margin, the second session went to Caernarfon — and the League of Wales outfit of seasoned campaigners from Merseyside could well have snatched something. Swansea had around half-a-dozen first-team regulars in their starting line-up and they launched into an offensive mode from the kick-off. A free-kick in Caernarfon's half saw the ball slipped to Jason Price who thundered in a 25-yarder which Clifton did well to smother at the foot of the post. Then a slick four-man move set up Boyd, but he provided a poor finish by selfishly shooting from a tight angle on the left — the ball ending up in the side netting. Then team-mate Steve Jones thumped a shot goalwards only for the Phil Daley, Caernarfon's main striker, but back to augment the defence, to clear near the line. Swansea's Richard Appleby featured in a delightful run from the left-wing when he cut inside sharply and skipped past three defenders to unleash an 18-yarder a foot off the mark. Ryan Casey blasted over from 20 yards and Lee Jenkins did the same as Swansea continued to promise much without actually delivering — and half-time arrived with the score sheet still blank despite the one-way traffic. Caernarfon launched the second session with new urgency and their first sortie saw Daley rush towards 'keeper Jones for a 50-50 ball — the latter getting there first by a fraction. When Caernarfon won a free-kick on the halfway line, Peter Byrne floated the ball forward for player-manager Paul Rowlands to get behind Swansea's defence but his header at 10 yards was woefully misused. The goal, after 58 minutes, although long overdue, came out of the blue and resulted from a raid down Swansea's right wing and a sequence of shots, two by Tony Bird and then Walter Boyd. The first was blocked by Clifton and then Bird's second effort flew to Boyd who showed the perfect temperament to convert from 12 yards at a slight angle on the left. Strangely, little of consequence occurred after that in either penalty box, even though half an hour of the match remained — apart from one major escape by Swansea on 70 minutes. Daley found himself free and in possession and let fly with a rising 20-yarder which skimmed passed an upright as Jones looked on. Click here to return to the main page. |
