Video clipsAll the goals 2.2 MbListers' view - Gary Martin A poor match on a cold but dry night in scumsville. All goals came in the first half with the young Swans a yard faster than the young students. JH picked a very young side with the exception of Keith walker in central defence and Tony Bird at centre forward. 19 year old Kevin Evans made his debut alongside Walker.
Swans lined up Swans opened the scoring on 16 mins when some excellent close control and trickery from Keegan saw him feed the ball wide left to Roberts who played in a perfect cross to the head of Bird 1-0. Just 9 mins later, Bird involved again, doubled Swansea's score with a quick flick over the IC back four where Mutton was first to the ball to lob the advancing keeper from 15 yards out. Next bit of action saw Kevin Evans booked in the 26th minute for a deliberate trip at the edge of the box. He could have had no complaints if the card had been red as it was a blatant chop after he had lost concentration and let his opponent through on goal. With just 2 mins to go to the interval, the tricky Barwood tormented the left back with his pace and should have had a penalty when he was held back after flicking the ball around his opponent and him going the other way to collect. The ref waved play on but justice was done when in the next yard he was upended by a clumsy challenge. Bird made no mistake from the spot. 3-0 and off for a coffee at 30p per cup. Between the 43rd minute penalty and reaching the refreshment area, IC had pulled one back. Apparently their striker was gifted a chance from another Evans error. The second half was reminiscent of many of the dire performances of two months ago and the only interest was to view how the young substitutes would fare. Firstly, Gregson came on for Jenkins but playing at right back (Phillips moving to central midfield), then Grant James came on for the injured Keegan and finally Chris Todd replaced Keith Walker for the final 10 minutes. Summary: Bird looked very busy in the first half (may have something to do with the 10K up for grabs for the top scorer in this comp) and Roberts and Barwood also featured. Keegan looked good in close control but frequently wasted the final ball. It would probably be unfair to judge Evans on this one showing, but the gap between the premiership and LoW was hardly discernible. Not a great match but another few grand for the coffers for picking up a fairly easy win against 2nd class opposition. TWO-GOAL BIRD FLYING HIGH AGAIN FOR SWANS Daily Mirror TRANSFER-listed striker Tony Bird gave Swans' manager John Hollins a timely reminder of his goalscoring prowess last night. Bird, placed on the list last month by mutual consent after failing to force his way into the first team, struck twice as group leaders Swansea strolled into the quarter-finals of the lucrative FAW Premier Cup. It took Bird's goal tally in the competition to five and made him the leading marksman so far. Inter, fielding a side made up entirely of students from Cardiff University, found themselves trailing after 16 minutes when Bird met a perfect Stuart Roberts' cross to head home his first. Bird also had a hand in Swansea's second after 25 minutes, when Tommy Mutton met his through ball with a lob over the stranded James Robinson. Inter found themselves three down two minutes from the interval when Marc Burrow brought down the busy Bird and the striker slotted home the penalty. But Inter's hard work was rewarded on the stroke of half-time when Logan Plant, son of Led Zeppelin pop legend Robert Plant, slotted the ball beyond Carl Thomas to make it 3-1. Swansea's loan signing from Leeds, Kevin Evans, 19, had an easy debut. Click here to return to the main page. |
