Watkin and Price make sure it's a Worthy night - Daily Mirror

SWANSEA put aside their sorry start to the season with a fine Worthington Cup win last night.

Goals by Steve Watkin and Jason Price coupled with a late penaltry save by Roger Freestone gave them a comfortable lead to take to Millwall for the second leg of this first round clash.

Swans' boss John Hollins made changes to the side that lost 1-0 at York with Tony Bird Price Kristian O'Leary and Stuart Roberts all in the side.

And it proved just the kick up the backside Swansea needed as they dominated a bruising game.

There was no sign of any trouble on the terraces after Saturday's riot in Cardiff but there were no prisoners taken on the field as Price felt the full force of a crude David Livermore tackle after just nine minutes - a lunge which earned him a first yellow card.

Millwall right back Lucas Neil was proving trouble for Swansea as Paul Shaw headed his first cross just over the bar before a second delivery forced Freestone to pull off a great save from Tim Cahill. Swansea stormed back and there were loud penalty cries when Martin Thomas was brought down by Steven Reid.

Swansea were furious with referee Mike Fletcher as the game started to deteriorate into a scrappy spectacle.

Only the arrival of a large police presence brought Swansea's North Bank back to life with chants of what a waste of money as they out-numbered the small band of travelling Millwall fans as a poor half came to stuttering close.

Millwall keeper Tony Warner hardly had a save to make and frustration boiled over when O'Leary went sliding through Cahill for the second yellow of the tie.

Warner did finally touch the ball - only to pick it out of his own net as Swansea struck a crucial blow in injury time.

A huge kick from Freestone was flicked on by Bird and Steve Watkin demonstrated why he finished last season as top scorer by lobbing the ball over Warner.

It was Watkins last kick of the game as he was replaced at the start of the second half by Julian Alsop. And it was the big striker who helped put Swansea further ahead within two minutes of therestart. Roberts delivered a deep cross to the far post Alsop headed it back and defender Jason Price arrived unmarked to power the header home.

Skipper Nick Cusack should have made it three in the 67th minute when his curling shot hit the inside of the post before tempers flared again between Alsop and keeper Warner. That wasn't the end of the night's drama.

Ten minutes from time Price gave away a penalty for handball but keeper Freestone saved substitute Neil Harris's penalty.

Lister's report - Gary Martin

The match itself was not much of a spectacle although the pitch with a steady drizzle provided the ideal surface for good football.

Hollins rang the changes by either resting or dropping Steve Jones Richie Appleby Jonathan Coates and Julian Alsop. They were respectively replaced by Price Roberts O'Leary and Bird.

A frenetic midfield battle for the first half hour with few if any clear cut chances being created. First incident of note was a Gordon Banks type save from Roger when a downward header by Moody looked a certain goal at the foot of the right post.

On 44 mins we got the first goal. Bird won his first aeriel battle of the night to flick on between and beyond the Millwall back four. Watkin was first to react by getting behind them and lobbing the on rushing keeper. Well taken goal which would have graced any standard of football.

For the 2nd half Alsop appeared in place of Watkin who had taken some heavy tackles from behind in the first 45 minutes.

With the half just minutes old the ball found its way wide on the right to the advancing Stu Roberts. With the crowd urging him to run at his full back he instead played the percentage ball of a cross deep to the far post where Alsop rose above his marker to head back across goal. Jason Price from the right back spot! was on hand to head the ball home and double the Swans lead.

A 10 minute period of attacking followed and Cusack was very unlucky to see his shot and turn rebound off the post after a right side corner.

Swansea then laspsed into the discredited tactic of last season by sitting deep trying to hold onto their lead. The pressure finally told when the ball from a right wing cross hit JJ on the hand. The ref had no hesitation in awarding the penalty.

Freestone again came to Swansea's rescue with a save and parry but Millwall have only themselves to blame for not converting the rebound.

An excellent result against higher opposition - sound familiar?
