Video clipsListers' view #1 - Gary Martin Another disappointing display from two of the higher rated teams in the Third Division. With all teams at the top looking as if they intend to limp over the finishing line, form teams such as Cheltenham Town are taking full advantage by creeping unnoticed up the table.
It's probably fair to say that Swansea, Darlington and Rotherham have little interest in the championship, happy instead to settle for a berth just above the play-offs irrespective of its position. For 90 minutes, the most notable thing on show was the fact that Price had dyed his hair back to its natural black colour. Then with the board having just been held up to indicate 3 minutes of added time, the game exploded into action. A hopeful long ball, saw Posh striker Clarke outpace the out of sorts Swansea back line and find space for a clear shot on goal. With a well hit shot, the ball looked destined for the top left hand corner of the net when, Freestone who had had nothing to do, launched himself to his left and with a fully outstretched left arm, just managed to connect with ball and push it wide to safety. From the resulting clearance, the ball fell to Boyd in the box, whose shot was charged down. The ball fell to Appleby whose teasing lob caused their 6'3" keeper to scramble back and palm the ball over the bar to safety. It was difficult to pick a player from the Swansea side who came out of the game with any credit and so the man of the match award had to go to Roger Freestone. Steve Jones and Mike Howard tried hard and saw quite a bit of the ball - but their distribution was atrocious today. Smith and Bound had their most uncomfortable time for a long time up against Jason Lee and aerial supremacy belonged to him. Cusack and Thomas were frequently caught on the ball by the combative Peterborough outfit and as a result, the game NEVER flowed.
Out wide, both Price and Coates had games to forget although neither gave up trying. I thought the cheer for Coates getting taken off was unjustified and can't be doing his confidence any good. Watkin and Alsop were well contained by a strong posh defence although Watkin did control a lot of the balls played up to him. Again the main problem was poor distribution. Appleby was the only bright spot in the outfield arena for Swansea and did make a few effective runs down the left wing. Boyd who had come on for Price nearly had a goal with his first touch, but his shot was blocked by some excellent Posh defending. O'Leary replaced Coates but the 3 or 4 touches and shots he had were abysmal. It's fair to say he was no worse than anyone else though. Listers' view #1 - Clive Hughes (Coventry) We travelled down today not really knowing what to expect after recent results by both teams. Not much action to report on as most of the game was played between the two penalty areas with both defences on top. The game did not have a chance to flow with some fussy and sometimes inept refereeing aided by his team.
We did have a couple of half chances but were not quick enough to take them. Peterborough although looking busy in attack were for most of the time well marshalled by our defence. Thomas after having a couple of knocks in the first half was replaced by Appleby at half time who did show some of his talent with a couple of runs. About half way through the second half Boyd replaced Price and 10 ins from time O'Leary came on for Coates. No lack of effort by the players and our man of the match Alsop did direct many headers but with no support and a tight defence no chances really came our way.
The promotion jitters are setting in as the ball was given away far too often with many easy passes going to the opposition. At least with Northampton losing and Rotherham & Darlington drawing we did not lose ground on other teams, and we still find ourselves limping to the finishing line. Slightly disappointing gate of 6500 but was still 1000 better than any 3rd Div game and was not boosted by many away fans (150??). Maybe the Grand National was the reason as we saw many D Coaches returning on the M5 www.sports.com report Jittery Swansea fired blanks but crawled towards the second division gates at Vetch Field.
It was the sixth league match in succession The Swans have failed to win and means only five points from a possible 18 have been collected. Now boss John Hollins wants his men to relax. "It was so tight out there," he said. "We are standing around at the moment, perhaps we are leaning towards safety right now.
But I don't think either side produced too many smooth moves today." And Hollins bemoaned a rutted Vetch surface. "We started well, but the bobbly pitch spoilt so many good things." But Peterborough manager Barry Fry was pleased with some reward. He said: "We always knew it was going to be tough down here. And we weren't at the races for the first 20 minutes, so we're delighted with the point." The big shirt-sleeve crowd basked in dazzling sunshine, but the early moves were nervy as the rivals acknowledged the importance of the clash. But Swansea were threatening from a couple of set-pieces inside the first eight minutes. Jon Coates' free-kick dissected a congested area before Julian Alsop just failed to tuck home Jason Smith's excellent knock-back . And Swansea's white tide was advancing again after 15 minutes.
Nick Cusack and Martin Thomas opened up Posh with a sharp interchange, Bart Greimick springing to his right to grip Coates' angled drive. Wide man Dave Farrell was desperately attempting to spark menace from a right-side role, but Peterborough were struggling to damage Swansea. After 24 minutes, Hollins' Swans almost sailed in front. Thomas beat Scott and Edwards at the left side but flying Dutchman Griemink blocked the thundering Alsop. But both sides appeared snared in a midfield battle.
Ex-Welsh Under-21 international Jason Price raised hopes in the 41st minute as he danced around Simon Rea before lifting over from 18 yards. Tempers were fraying in first-half stoppage time as ex-Forest star Jason Lee saw yellow after an ugly fracas with Alsop. Richard Appleby came from the bench at the interval to replace Thomas and was soon in the action after 52 minutes. Bursting past David Oldfield, the Geordie's dipping right-footer had Griemink scrambling to smother. But Peterborough were asking questions on the hour , Oldfield's blistering free-kick striking Smith on its way to Roger Freestone's chest.
Swansea's frustrations deepen, but they almost lost their precious point in the second minute of stoppage time. Posh raider Andy Clarke turned Smith but Freestone brilliantly dived to his left to beat away the pile-driver.
