Swans and the Internet

I have been invited to contribute a regular column in the Matchday Magazine to keep the supporters up to date with the Swans on the Internet.

The article that appeared in the Hull programme on Saturday 17/1/98 is reproduced here.

Swans on the net

With the mailing list membership very close to 300, there is no shortage of debate on the sad plight of the Swans. Opinions on what should be done are arriving daily from as far afield as the US and Australia. Despite our geographical differences, we are all united in the hope that things will improve on the field sooner rather than later.

The Swans on the net may have notched up another notable first. Neil McClure recently gave up a full hour of his private time to connect live with Swansea fans on the Internet. Many tough questions were put to him and he answered them fully and frankly. He has promised to repeat this exercise and we are grateful to him for that. Can you see the Man Utds and Arsenals of this world agreeing to this?

Football is in your blood, and being born in Romford, I had to have West Ham running through my veins. And so for the first 24 years of my life this was all football meant to me... Oh and a great following of Ian Rush! (Well I am half Welsh!)

In 1993 I had just returned from Australia, full of the excitement of Aussie Rules Football. The invite from my new found boyfriend (a life long Swans fan) to spend a damp Tuesday evening in Cambridge watching Swansea was the beginning of a blossoming love affair! We sat amongst the just double figure Swans crowd, saw them lose 2-0 and I was hooked - Peter (the boyfriend) was delighted!

Since then I have watched Swansea play at over 30 grounds - from Peterborough it is hard to get to the Vetch regularly, but we try to tie in all our family visits with home games. Many highlights - most memorably, meeting Jan Molby pre Bradford beating us 5-1; and many lowlights - most memorably, our second Wembley experience of the 90's. Countless miles, games, goals and Managers - even an interview in York for Danish Television!

Gary Martin's internet pages are essential for Jacks, especially those outside of the city. The mailing list is great fun although I'd like some more vocal females to back me up at times! I wouldn't swap the Swans for anything (sorry Mr Redknapp!) and I'm doing my best as a teacher to re-educate the youth of Peterborough.
