The article that appeared in the Macclesfield programme on Saturday 31/1/98 is reproduced here.
You may remember me mentioning in an earlier article the rivalry that exists between supporters of different clubs. What is not so well known is the camaraderie that also exists, especially when one club is in deep trouble.
Last year when Brighton were protesting vehemently against the way their club was being run - into the ground almost - an appeal was made for support from other clubs. This did not fall on deaf ears and most web sites, including our own, carried a banner message highlighting their plight. We also advertised their day of action where supporters of all clubs went to one of the Brighton home matches to express solidarity.
This season, Doncaster Rovers find themselves in a similar position and they have now turned to the Internet for help. Here's an excerpt from the message sent by Bob Gilbert of the Doncaster website:-
You may know by now that on February 14th, Brighton & Hove Albion are hosting the Rovers at Gillingham's Priestfield Stadium. This day will see a new improved version of the famous Fans United event that Brighton held last year. It will be held under the banner of Fans United 2 - 'The Heart of Football'. It will kick off on the previous Friday evening with the supporters of Cambridge and Lincoln letting go, on live Sky television, a lot of red, white and blue balloons as a show of support.
Amongst the events planned are a mass demonstration of support from around the world evidenced by club scarves sent in as a symbol of support letting off red, white and blue balloons at as many matches that day at 3.15pm as we can persuade people to do; a celebratory concert in the evening in Brighton and the donation of scarves sent in to a children's charity
We'd like as many people as possible to join our 'Send a Scarf' campaign (thank you to Diane in Switzerland for the Grasshoppers scarf). If you can afford it, can you send a scarf as soon as possible (any condition!) of the club you support to: PO Box 8, Fairford, Gloucestershire, England. GL7 4YJ
I would also really appreciate any spreading of the word about all this that you can give. If you let me know, I will do my best to acknowledge on the website (http://www.doncaster-rovers.demon.co.uk) your help and your club.
Once again, my thanks for taking time to read this, and to everyone who has helped so much.
Cheers
Bob Gilbert
