The article that appeared in the Peterborough programme on Saturday 14/2/98 is reproduced here.
One thing that the Internet seems to concentrate on more than any other is the topic of statistics.
This is quite relevant for the Swansea City web-site at the moment. Sometime during the afternoon of Thursday 5th February 1998, the site notched up its 50,000th visitor - not bad for a team languishing in the lower reaches of the Third Division.
This figure illustrates the potential support and interest that there is in Swansea City Football Club. All we need now is improved performances/facilities and this support could actually come flooding through the turnstiles.
A long standing member of the mailing list, Keith Nevin - who works in Dublin for the Irish Times, passed another statistic on to me just last week. Whilst cleaning out his computer's hard drive, he discovered that in the last twelve months, over 3500 messages had been sent around the Swansea Mailing List. With the list membership standing currently at 300+, this works out at over 1 million individual deliveries! Now I know we've had more than our fair share of topics to discuss over the last year, but this figure surprised even me!
This week saw the publication of yet another football statistic - namely The Colman's Football Food Guide.
Researchers spent the first four months of the current season testing food at the 92 league grounds in England and Wales, plus Wembley.
Where do you think Swansea came in this list? No, not quite that bad - just 92nd out of 93.
The winners were Cambridge United, where catering manager, Carla Frediani, said the secret of the club's success was their bacon roll - described by the guide as a "spectacular high spot".
"We use best back bacon and put two rashers into each roll," she said. "The other thing is the smell. If you cook bacon the smell just gets to everyone. I'm a vegetarian but even I get tempted."
For the record, the top 5 were:- 1st Cambridge United, 2nd Huddersfield Town, 3rd Rochdale, 4th Chesterfield, 5th Charlton Athletic. (Peterborough came 85th).
