Matchday Programme Internet Article

Leyton Orient - 22nd August 1998

Swans on the net

I have just returned from my holiday in the Philadelphia area of the USA where the mention of football conjures up visions of 27 stone athletes wearing helmets.

So trying to find out how the Swans had got on by searching the newspapers, or asking at the hotel, proved to be as fruitful as seeing high quality football at Ninian Park.

However, thanks to the Internet (and my trusty laptop computer), I was able to keep track of the goals against Exeter as they were scored as well as the drama in the Norwich and Cambridge games. In fact one young lady emailed me to ask how I had known Ryan Casey had given us a 6th minute lead away at Cambridge at 3:07pm before she'd even got it on Teletext in the UK!

Another growing use of the Internet by Swans fans is that of IRC - Internet Relay Chat. This is a facility whereby any number of people can connect together and type messages that appear on everyone's screen almost simultaneously. This is proving popular with supporters when the Swans are away and Teletext and radio can be used to give up to the minute information on how the match is going to supporters unable to travel.

Again this facility is available not only in the UK, but WORLD-WIDE!

Mattias Neander, a Swedish wheelchair-bound supporter, who wrote an article in this section of the programme last year, particularly enjoys and relies on this.
