Each Monday morning, I will print out the week's comments and snailmail them to him at the Vetch. Any replies that I receive from him will be posted here.
Dear John Just want to wish you all the best in your race for promotion - this club really needs/deserves a manager like yourself who is the consummate professional. I coach at Virginia Commonwealth University - some excellent players in the states playing college soccer. Please let me know if I can suggest any players for you. Cheers, Ted Ted Jones - Richmond, Virginia, USA - 25/8/98
Dear John I would just like to say that, in my Eyes, Julian Alsop is souly an ariel man, as he is useless with his feet. Could U look for a quality ariel player with skill on the ground. I think your doing an excellent job, but without Alsop you and the team could do far better. Andrew Gwynn, Swansea, 25/8/98
Dear John Can we expect additions to the squad in the near future? Iam a liitle worried when I think about who is going to score goals for us this year. Good luck. Gareth J Jones location: Rhuddlan, North Wales date: 25th Aug 1998

Dear John While we all accept that you have a squad of 29 to choose from. There can be no doubt that there are some inherent weaknesses, particularly on the left, and a percentage of this squad is mediocre. I know you've been assessing the strengths -&- weaknesses, but surely Curtis could've filled you in on this one. We need to set our stall out NOW if we're going to go for promotion...and that means standing your ground against your good friend Hamer and demanding that they purchase some quality players to get us out of this division. Curtis has no doubt been going on about Gary Lloyd -hardly surprising since he's in contact with him on a daily basis, yet McClure won't sanction his transfer. We also need another midfielder and a more mobile attack force. Come on John, you know the game....get cracking and demand some cash for rebuilding -or we'll still be in this mess come next summer. I'd hate to see your good nature -&- work ruined. From Mouthful of Lead, Port Talbot, 24/8/98
Dear John Some observations from the Orient game.... I'm a big admirer of Richie Appleby but there was one incident in Saturday' match which perturbed me. Mid way through the first half, Appleby was attacking deep down the right flank near the corner flag when a free kick/goal kick was awarded against him. He was the only player near the ball and reluctantly dribbled it back as he ran back. But instead of passing it to the keeper who was 20 yards away he churlishly left it. Now I'm all for giving 100% and giving the opponents nothing but this was sheer bad sportsmanship and perhaps gives an insight into why he was booked and sent off so many times last season. ================================================================= With us playing the ball out from the back a lot more now (very welcome too), both full backs get to see a lot of the ball in an attacking sense. It was noticeable on Saturday that Mike Howard tends to cut inside once over the half way line thereby crowding the midfield and usually bogging down the momentum of the attack. Surely the optimum is to get as far down the line as possible and get a cross over for the strikers? From Gary Martin, Llanelli, 23/8/98
