Matthew started at the club he had supported as a child, Southampton. After turning professional, appearances were difficult to come by so he joined
Hull City on loan where he was to score his first
league goal.
Stockport County later snapped him up where he
held down a regular place. A broken foot and
change of manager halted his run at Edgeley Park.
After a loan spell at Lincoln, he joined the Swans
where he has become a firm favourite with the fans.
1999/2000
Mathew is a strong left sided central defender
whose partnership with Jason Smith has gelled well
and continued to improve. He was transfer listed
back in October after failing to agree terms over a
new contract but has since signed on the dotted
line. Mathew's fellow professionals named him in the
Third Division select team.
