As a teenager, Ryan played in his home country and arrived at the Vetch through an Ian Rush Tournament in Aberystwyth. Whilst playing for Dublin side Belvedere he was spotted by youth team coach Ron Walton. He later signed trainee forms with the Swans and progressed through to turn professional. Ryan has represented the Republic of Ireland at Under-i 8 level and helped his team lift the European Championship (Under-i 8) title after beating Germany in the Final of the tournament, which was held in Cyprus.

1999/2000
Ryan has had limited opportunities in the first team with most of them being as a substitute. His frightening pace will be a key to his future success along with his ball movement and crossing ability. He is waiting patiently for his chance to come and it will be sooner rather than later.
