Paul Nicholas is a bank manager who is best known on this site for his frequent missives to the press - usually pulling them up on one point or another.
Like many Swans fans, Paul caught the fever in the First Division 70's and after a prolonged spell with no symptoms, thought he was cured.
But then along came Molby and the disease resurfaced.
In his own words ... "and now I got it bad again doctor."
Friday, January 17, 2003The tensions and frustrations associated with the fight for League survival are seriously beginning to tell on the faces, and in the words, of the players and fans alike. Following Tuesday’s latest home defeat, this time at the hands of Bury, fans woke up the next day to read Jason Smith telling them to get off the players’ backs, as retaining League status for the club means more to the players than it does to the fans. I would suggest that he has been a little too dismissive of the depth of feeling that most fans have for the club, and it is hardly a comment that the newly appointed club captain will file away in his ‘how to bolster support’ drawer. Here we are, a proud and historic club, anchored to the foot of the nationwide League, five defeats in a row, still drawing a crowd of over 3,500, mostly paying good money to watch poor football, and we are told to get off the players’ backs. Now if his comments were aimed at the minority yelling abusive suggestions at specific players, despite the call to arms for the choir boys to deliver positive grunts in the team’s time of need, then there may be some merit, but the way it was portrayed in the Evening post did little to drive the majority of the battle weary followers to dig deep into their pockets for the next couple of games to see more of the same. These words regarding the players’ concerns certainly do not match up to the visual evidence that we have been watching in recent weeks, and even though there was a certain amount of fight in the second half on Tuesday, it needs more than that to win games when you are starting the fight at 0-3. Starting to play like that when all is even may be a suggestion Flynn could throw into the next training session, but there he would have thought of that already wouldn’t he? With the news breaking today that Kevin Nugent is coming on loan for a month, the debate continues to roll about the midfielder that we have all said is so desperately needed. Rumours are that another signing is imminent, but has the recent form of our ‘premiership’ boys slightly stunted the fans’ excitement and enthusiasm for more signings. Our form and results since the recent influx of players took place has been as poor as it was before. The expectations of the fans at the announcement of any Premiership club squad member being signed were lifted to heights above and beyond where they should have been. With the exception of Tate, the reality is that we have players who have been with Premiership clubs, but who were extremely unlikely to make the grade at that level. Premiership clubs to me are like trawlers, throwing their nets far and wide and scooping up all talent available. Once they have had time to take a closer look at some of the catch, they methodically throw the surplus, or below par, back into the sea for a smaller boat following in the big ship’s wake, to pick up. That is where we are with these players, and the recent announcement by Glenn Roeder that Leon Britton could stay for the season, and would then become free agent at the end of the season, just added another colour to the picture that we need to visualise and understand. We are not filling our team with Premiership players; we are filling the team with what still should be good players, but players who couldn’t make it at the top. As the weeks have passed by, more and more fans have been seen conditioning themselves for the worst possible scenario. People are even starting to look at a drop into the Conference as almost a good thing, as we would be top of a division, playing good football, bigger crowds, and then we could leap back up into the 3rd Division in no time. After all the Conference is really Division 4 isn’t it? Well it is if you now discount the Premiership, and I can only assume then that in the event of the Phoenix League kicking in, which would see large chunks of the 1st Division sucked up into the big boys league, the 2nd could become the 1st, the 3rd the 2nd and the Conference the 3rd. Now we’re talking. Then the Ryman, Doc Martens and whatever the third one is, will become the 3rd Divisions. At this rate we could carry on being relegated, and still retain Division 3 status for years to come!! And throughout all this, as long as the loud speaker announcement at the end of each home match tells us that our rivals up the M4 have lost, everything will be OK, because hating them is what really matters as the choir will continuously tell us throughout the game. We are now four points adrift at the foot of the table. People keep saying that it’s only four points and a couple of wins would see us move up. That’s always based on the assumption that all the teams above us lose when we pick up the elusive 3 points, and that’s just not happening, or even looking likely to happen. Talk of another change of management at this stage just leaves me cold. Results are not good but quite what putting a different set of faces in the dug out would achieve I am not sure. Cusack took over with Addison’s squad, Flynn took over with Cusack’s squad, and each in turn has had a clear out. On paper someone should be reasonable happy to take on Flynn’s squad, but it rarely works like that and we just do not have the time for musical chairs again this season.
But when you're walkin' down the street, And you ain't had enough to eat, The glitter rubs right off, And you're nowhere. Let’s hope that we don’t reach that stage, but time is slipping away at all too fast a rate now.
