Look Hughes Talkin' |
Now that I've moved from an occasional North Bank Natter, to a slightly more regular column, a little bit about myself.
I hit the magical 50 this year. I am an ex Ystalyfera boy and left there in the early sixties to spend 2 years in Dundee. Since then I have lived in Coventry, so a vast majority of Swans games have been away. The last fifteen years have seen me being accompanied by, first one son Gareth, and then a second son David. |

THEY THINK IT'S ALL OVER
We have the Hartlepool manager, Neale Cooper, saying that it would be good for him to have the chance of first team football instead of sitting on the bench. I read Brian Flynn saying that it will be good competition for Roger. Well all this doesn't make sense How can a keeper coming in on a month's loan supposedly only while Murphy is away, be competition for Roger? In that month starting with the Darlington game, which he did not play in, there are three more league games, and Stevenage in the cup. Assuming that he will not be allowed to be cup tied, that only leaves three league games Surely unless Roger is injured there is no chance of him having a game. As far as Hartlepool will be concerned there is no benefit, as far as he is concerned there is no benefit The only benefit is that the Swans will have had cover for any unforeseen circumstances. Does this mean there is a chance of an extended loan, or even a permanent move back to Wales? If so, where does that leave Roger, will he be classed as the number one, or after only one bad match be dropped, having to fight for his place back? Since making his return to the Vetch in September 1991 Roger has been ever present every season, apart from the odd end of season game given to the reserve keeper He did miss 8 games through injury at the start of 1999, and of course last season, when injury again forced him out. With Cutler in form, Roger had to see the season out from the touchline He is back between the posts in his rightful place, and commands his area as well as any time in the past. He has been so consistent that over the years no number two has had a look in I believe Roger still has at least another good season left in him. That gives time to groom a replacement Another reason for me giving this time span can be classed sentimental, but not at the expense of the team. At the start of the season Roger had played 529 league games for the club, add to that the 14 this season and he currently stands at 543 The equivalent of one full season will see him take the record of individual career league games from Wilf Milne. This to add to the many records he already has Most clean sheets in a season(22), most games in one season (66) as well as the most consecutive games (186) So, to achieve that record, Roger has to see this season out, and play half of next season. I for one want to see that record broken and handed over to a true Vetch Legend Tommy Hutchinson was 43 when he played for us. Roger is just a spring chicken They think it's all over, it ISN'T now.
