Current standings:

Boston v Carlisle is the basement battle of the day (there seems to be one every weekend now) and from the Swans point of view, a draw will keep both teams within touching distance. A home win for Boston will not be a complete disaster though as it will cement Carlisle in the bottom four.

Bristol Rovers v Shrewsbury is a match where we want to see Shrewsbury come out on top. Although in the mix, the fact they have 4 games in hand on the Swans shows them in a false light. It will be a bad day if Rovers can make it back to back wins.

Leyton Orient v Exeter - optimum result for us is an Orient win by a good margin thereby dragging Exeter's GD closer to ours.

Torquay v Swansea looks like a draw to me which won't be easy as Torquay are fighting for a play off spot. If our strikers don't turn up again this weekend though, we will be in big trouble.

Scunthorpe v Macclesfield - we need this one to go with form or Macclesfield will leapfrog us again. Surely Laws will fire up his 5th placed team and do us a favour? Don't put your house on it.

Monday 30th December 2002

Current standings:

The fixtures for New Year's Day are ..

Bournemouth v Swansea
Bristol Rovers v Torquay
Bury v Hull
Darlington v Rochdale
Exeter v Kidderminster
Hartlepool v Carlisle
Leyton Orient v Cambridge Utd
Lincoln City v Boston Utd
Rushden & D'monds v Shrewsbury
Southend v Oxford Utd
Wrexham v Macclesfield
York v Scunthorpe

Whereas recent form shows us having about as much chance as a snowball surviving in hell, the daunting trip to Bournemouth may just throw up a surprise. I'm not putting any money it though, so expect nothing and rejoice if we get a point or three.

Bristol Rovers have an all ambrosia match at home to Torquay and form suggests they will not add to their current tally. Exeter also face a tough task against Kidderminster and home advantage shouldn't be worth more than a point, if that.

Carlisle should also get nothing away at high-flying Hartlepool but will inconsistent Wrexham slip up again at home and let Macclesfield snatch all 3 points? I think they might.

So my predicted table is for a status quo with only Macclesfield possibly moving away.

Current standings:

The fixtures for Saturday 28/12/02 are ..

Bournemouth v Rochdale
Bristol Rovers v Boston Utd
Bury v Kidderminster
Darlington v Torquay
Exeter v Macclesfield
Hartlepool v Cambridge Utd
Leyton Orient v Carlisle
Lincoln City v Swansea
Rushden & D'monds v Oxford Utd
Southend v Scunthorpe
Wrexham v Shrewsbury
York v Hull

Swansea's trip to Lincoln may look hopeless but before Lincoln's away win at Macclesfield yesterday, their previous 6 results were D L L D L L. So I'm going for another surprise result with Swansea picking up at least a point by holding Lincoln's attack to no goals.

The point will do nothing to our position, but if we can sneak a win, we could move up 2 or 3 places depending on the Bristol Rover v Boston result. In the long term, the best result from Swansea's point of view would be a draw, but I expect Bristol Rovers to edge this by 2 clear goals.

Carlilse have a chance to move up as well with an away trip to Brisbane Road - and my tip here is for a score draw.

Our other relegation candidates also meet each other at St James Park where Exeter entertain Macclesfield. All these teams are within 4 points or less of us as the table currently stands. Again best long term view is that they draw. so that no team can escape the swamp by more than a point, but I expect Exeter to come out on top tomorrow.

My predicted table for tomorrow night is
19. Bristol Rovers 23 pts
20. Exeter 23 pts
21. Macclesfield 22 pts
22. Boston 21 pts
23. Carlisle 21 pts
24. Swansea 19 pts

Current standings:

The fixtures for Boxing Day are ..

Boston Utd v York
Cambridge Utd v Southend
Carlisle v Darlington
Hull v Hartlepool
Kidderminster v Leyton Orient
Macclesfield v Lincoln City
Oxford Utd v Bournemouth
Rochdale v Wrexham
Scunthorpe v Rushden & D'monds
Shrewsbury v Bury
Swansea v Bristol Rovers
Torquay v Exeter

Well it was 4 faults at the first hurdle last Saturday and my white hair is getting whiter with worry as we continue to spurn gilt-edged opportunities. The first half performance against Orient had me rushing over to Joe Corals at half-time to put a "cert" on us - money down the drain as it turned out.

Much comment has been passed on what Flynn tells the players at half-time, and many believe our downfall is down to this. Get real guys, this isn't Townhill under-8's, these are supposed to be "professional men."

Both Flynn and the players (and perhaps Curtis & Reeves too - remember them?) have a chance to partly put things right in our latest "must win" encounter with bottom club Bristol Rovers. Previous encounters with bottom (and near bottom) clubs have not turned out well for us and with that in mind, my rupees are on a 1-1 draw on Boxing Day.

Our fellow strugglers may well get a point as well - Boston at home to York and a local derby for Exeter away at hated rivals Torquay. Carlisle at home to Darlington also looks stalemate.

Those that have signed up for a betting account on this site, may fancy a quid on a treble of draws for Swansea, Torquay and Boston. Your £1 bet will return £35.36 if it comes up!

I expect Thursday night's bottom 4 to look exactly like the table above only with everyone 1 point better off

Friday 20th December 2002

Current standings:

The fixtures for next Saturday (21/12/02) are ..

Boston Utd v Shrewsbury
Bournemouth v Hull
Bury v Rochdale
Cambridge Utd v Bristol Rovers
Darlington v Macclesfield
Hartlepool v Scunthorpe
Oxford Utd v Exeter
Rushden & D'monds v Carlisle
Swansea v Leyton Orient
Torquay v Southend
Wrexham v Kidderminster
York v Lincoln City

There's an old indian story about a best horseman tournament that will help illustrate the importance of our next two games.

In this tournament, 46 hurdles are randomly placed at different heights around the arena. A horseman scores 3 points for every hurdle he clears cleanly, 1 point for clearing a hurdle but rattling it on the way, and no points if he fails to clear a hurdle.

Of course it's easier for the horsemen to clear the lower hurdles and that's where the struggling competitors have their best chance of picking up points.

This coming week, the Swans face two such "easier hurdles" - home to Leyton Orient and then home to Bristol Rovers on Boxing Day. These are both "must clear" obstacles. If we fail on either, the next set of hurdles are much higher.

I expect us to get 6 points from these two games. So come Boxing day evening we will be on 24 points.

But let's take one game at a time for now - we'll have 21 pts tomorrow night but what of our fellow strugglers?

Boston have a tough tie at home to Shrewsbury and will be lucky to pick up more than a point from that. Bristol Rovers are at Cambridge - again unlikely to move off their current 17 points. Carlisle are away at title chasing R&D - so the bookies will not be favouring them - and how often are they wrong?

Exeter travel to in-form Oxford and Boundy can do the Swans a big favour in this one. Our expected 3 points will allow us to gain ground on Macclesfield who might be good enough for a draw up at Feethams.

So my predicted bottom 6 for Saturday night is:

19. Macclesfield 22 pts
20. Swansea 21 pts
21. Exeter 19 pts
22. Carlisle 18 pts
23. Bristol Rovers 17 pts
24. Boston 16 pts

Wednesday 11th December 2002

Current standings:

The fixtures for next Saturday (14/12/02) are ..

Bristol Rovers v Oxford Utd
Carlisle v Wrexham
Exeter v Swansea
Hull v Darlington
Kidderminster v York
Leyton Orient v Torquay
Lincoln City v Cambridge Utd
Macclesfield v Rushden & D'monds
Rochdale v Hartlepool
Scunthorpe v Bury
Shrewsbury v Bournemouth
Southend v Boston Utd

So we travel to bottom but one Exeter with no away wins under our belt this season. But to balance this, Exeter have the worst home record in the league with just 2 wins and 2 draws - so I expect the bookies will be looking at a draw - and who am I to disagree with them? My rupees are going on 1-1 with Thomas first to score.

If this happens, we will be on 19 pts with a GD of -12. Of course Exeter will still be below us so it's a question of can Carlisle and Bristol Rovers leapfrog us?

Carlisle have a home tie with Wrexham, whom they beat 2-0 last night in the LDV. In common with most teams that end up playing each other in quick succession, I don't expect the result to be the same. I think Wrexham will pick up at least a draw leaving Carlisle on 19 pts like us but with an inferior GD of -15.

Bristol Rovers are also home, to Oxford. A fairly localish derby but will Rovers' new signings buck the trend that has seen them lose 5 at home and win only 3? My rupees again are on a draw (1-1) - so as long as we pick up the predicted point at St James, no change to the above table.

Boston could gain ground on all of us with a win at Southend, whose home form has been very poor of late.

Saturday 23rd November 2002

Current standings:

The fixtures for next Saturday (30/11/02) are ..

Boston Utd v Leyton Orient
Bournemouth v Scunthorpe
Bury v Exeter
Cambridge Utd v Macclesfield
Darlington v Southend
Hartlepool v Kidderminster
Oxford Utd v Lincoln City
Rushden & D'monds v Bristol Rovers
Swansea v Shrewsbury
Torquay v Rochdale
Wrexham v Hull
York v Carlisle

We need to be winning our matches against the likes of Shrewsbury although my prediction is for a score draw.

Boston look likely to pick up a max 3 pts against out of sorts Orient, so apart from gaining ground on Orient, we won't overtake Boston.

Exeter look unlikely to gain anything up at Bury and could even concede the 4 goals needed for us to overtake them (if we only draw).

Bristol Rovers must be the banker bet to lose further ground (and goals) away at R&D - but a draw for us won't be enough to overtake them.

However, if we win, I confidently expect us to be in 22nd position come 5 pm.

My predicted bottom table for next Sat night is ..

21. Boston 18 pts
22. Bristol R 17 pts
23. Exeter 16 pts
24. Swansea 16 pts

Although still bottom, a lot tighter than today.

Friday 15th November 2002

Next league action is 23/11/02. (Torquay & Kiddy play Tues but irrelevant to us at the mo).

Looking at the table this afternoon got me wondering about what might happen a week tomorrow.

We are away at Scunthorpe - who have been doing quite well lately, but a point could see us move out of the bottom 2.

For this to happen, other results would have to go our way.

Boston are away at Hull - probably a banker home win if it wasn't a localish derby.

Exeter are at home to Cambridge and would need to lose by 4 clear goals for us to overtake them (if we only draw).

Bristol Rovers are 2 points ahead of us and home to Wrectum - so only an away win for us would bring them into the equation.

So looks like we are going to have to wait until the last day of the month (home to Shrewsbury) before we might get out of the cross-hairs.
